The basics

Is SourClient free?
Yes. The client and every performance and quality-of-life feature are free, forever. The optional Sour Gold plan only adds cosmetics and creator-tier extras.
What is Sour Gold?
Sour Gold is the paid tier. It unlocks custom image capes, a gold name with unlockable colours, full accent and background theming, an ad-free launcher, and a store discount. It never changes gameplay. See the full breakdown on the Sour Gold page.
Do I need to own Minecraft?
Yes. SourClient does not include Minecraft. You sign in with a Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java Edition, and game files download straight from Mojang, exactly like the vanilla launcher.
Which versions are supported?
SourClient is built for 1.8.9, the competitive standard. Its native modules, render tiers, and cosmetics all target 1.8.9 today. The launcher can also install and run other vanilla versions, and full native support for more is on the roadmap. Track progress on the changelog.

Setup & safety

What about OptiFine?
You drop your own OptiFine 1.8.9 jar into the launcher once, and it is installed into every profile for you from then on. No per-instance jar-juggling. Your shaders and resource packs run untouched.
Is it safe? Does it see my password?
SourClient never sees your password. Sign-in goes through Microsoft's official flow. The client is a Forge-based mod set focused on rendering and quality of life, not a background data grab. Read exactly what we collect in the privacy policy.
Is this a hacked or cheat client?
No. SourClient has no cheats, no combat automation, and no unfair advantages. It is a performance and quality-of-life client. Cosmetics never touch gameplay.
How do I install it?
Download the launcher, sign in with Microsoft, and hit play. The launcher bundles its own Java. Drop in your own OptiFine jar once and it is installed for you on every launch after that. Full steps on the download page.
Can I import my setup from another client?
Yes. The launcher's importer pulls profiles, options, and resource packs from Lunar, Badlion, and the vanilla launcher, so you are not starting from scratch.
Is there a Mac or Linux build?
The first public build targets Windows 10 and 11. Other platforms are being evaluated. Watch the changelog for updates.

Cosmetics & community

Can I use my own image as a cape?
Yes, with Sour Gold. Upload any image and it becomes your cape, rendered with cloth physics. In-world sync, other SourClient players seeing your cape, ships with the account service. This is the flagship Sour Gold feature, and it is something Lunar and Badlion do not offer. They only give you a fixed cape library.
How does cape sync work?
Cape sync is free in the client. Set your cape once and, through the SourClient account service, every SourClient player sees it in-world, streamed and cached so there is no hitch, and you see theirs. In-world sync rolls out with the account service.
Custom capes are open uploads, is that safe?
You are always in control of what you see. Custom capes can be blurred by default, and you choose to reveal a single player or opt in to see all of them. So a younger player never has to see something inappropriate just because someone uploaded it, while players who want the full experience can turn blurring off. Backend moderation can also withhold reported images entirely.
Can I see other players' stats?
Yes. The players page lets you search the community by username to see skin, playtime, plan, join date, and cape. You control what shows on your own card from your account.
Is SourClient affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft?
No. SourClient is an independent project and is not an official Minecraft product, nor approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft. See the disclaimer.
